I am 50 (Good Grief) and live in Norman, Oklahoma. I am going to graduate school but I do not know if I will be there after this semester. I have dealt with depression most of my adult life and in the course of pschyotherapy(sp?) was discoverd or thought to possibly have ADD. I have taken Strattera, Adderall and now am on Ritalin. Medication offers some help with both of these conditions but as we all know it is not the total treatment.
I have a 21 year old son who has diabetes type 1 and is also thought to have ADD. He has taken Ritalin and is now on Adderall with good success. What and I both struggle a lot with is repairing the messed up patterns and habits we have both developed to cope with ADD.
i.e. Good Diabetes self management works best when you have a regular routine and plan ahead. However because he rarely does anything on a routine my son has some trouble with his diabetes. He says that a lot of things people suggest to him to help him get things done actually require as much time and energy to do as doing the task itself.
For myself, I too have trouble sticking to a schedule, not
procrastinating, being on time and clutter. I am hoping to talk to other people with the same problems and picking up some positive tried in the trenches help. I hope to be helpful to others as well.
For so long I have only been able to respond to my lacks in a moralistic manner. Why am I so stupid? How come I can't make myself do things when I am supposed to? I must be lazy or something (but what?)
A couple further things and then I'll stop blathering. I am completely unfamiliar with this format so I will probably make mistakes - sorry in advance. Also, as you might have guessed I really like to use words. That is all for now. I look forward to reading and writing of and to folks.
