Hi! It's nice to have a place to go where we all understand and are understood.
I'm 35, married, mom of two boys (9 & 7) and several animals. I have a music performance degree (voice) and have part-time jobs singing with local symphony choruses, also some church singing. The past 5 years have been a time of gradual discovery, beginning with my younger son and working its way through all of us. In a nutshell, my youngest has ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) as well as ADHD, my 9-year-old has ADHD with oppositional tendencies, my husband has ADHD and bipolar disorder, and I have ADHD with some OCD tendencies. Whew!
Yes, I have my hands full. My house is rarely uncluttered and clean. Most of our bills are on auto pay (after years of late fees). My best coping tools are list-making and a PDA for keeping track of appointments.
I'm currently taking Welbutrin and Paxil. I had a lot of success on Adderall XR with motivation, memory, accomplishment, and patience, but had such an increase in OCD-style symptoms that the time I gained was practically negated, so that's over. Success with meds is currently so-so.
I have the toughest time with my mom, who lives close by and is a primary caregiver for our kids. She just doesn't understand, thinks ADHD is a convenient excuse. As far as she's concerned I don't care about my house and kids, only myself. She can have her own opinions; I've come to terms with the guilt. It's just that I don't want to hear it over and over. My mother-in-law, thank goodness, has come to accept where our family is at, and has even said she doesn't know how I manage - one down!
So, hey, I'd love to hear if anyone else has some of these problems and how they cope. Cheers!
