Hello everyone,
My name is Valerie LeBlanc; I am a 23-year-old university graduate student from the University of New Brunswick (Canada) currently working on my Master of Arts. I am a medical anthropologist by training. Anthropology, in a nutshell, is the study of humans (and non-human primates, such as gorillas and chimps) around the world and at all times (pre-history through to today). Medical anthropology is a subgroup which concerns itself with the human experience of illness.
I do not have ADHD, although I do have friends who do. For the past 6 months, I have been doing research on the subject of ADHD/ADD — its historical roots, possible causes, etc. I have noticed that most of the literature on ADHD tends to talk about people with ADHD — i.e. physicians discussing theories of what it is; parents discussing their children — but no one seems to have asked what people with ADHD think about their illness, how it affects them, how it should be treated, etc. Personally, I find it unfortunate that the people who are affected most by the label ‘ADHD’ are the ones who seem to have little imput into how it is defined and treated by the medical establishment and society-at-large.
Therefore, I have proposed a study which examines the experiences and understandings of people who have ADHD. I would like to gather information about how people with ADHD define their illness, their experiences with medical staff and with employment, etc. In short, I am looking for testimonials from people with ADHD. The findings of my study would then be available in limited published form as my thesis.
If you would like to participate in my study (or simply would like more information), please e-mail me personally at virtualnarrator@yahoo. I will then send you a short questionnaire through e-mail. Please keep in mind that your privacy is important — any identifying characteristics, such as names and places, will be omitted or changed before my thesis is presented.
Thank you for your time.
